← Founder of Keep Plain Language NZ
Hi, my name is Connie Bachle.
I'm currently in my final year of college, and as my last Social Studies project I decided to take action on an issue relating to disability issues. This is how I found out about the Plain Language Repeal Bill.
About the bill
For those unfamiliar,
The government are trying to repeal the Plain Language Act 2022, with their new bill “The Plain Language Repeal Bill”. I have decided to take action on this by creating a petition that will be presented in parliament by MP Priyanca Radhakrishnan.
The Plain Language Act 2022 plays a vital role in ensuring that the New Zealand Government’s communications remain accessible to the public, particularly those who face barriers in understanding complex English.
The government is trying to repeal this act.
This could disproportionately affect people with intellectual or learning disabilities, or those for whom English is a second language. These groups of people are also more likely to interact with government documents such as benefit forms, and by removing access to simple language, the government is potentially further marginalising them.
Plain language helps New Zealanders to understand their rights, responsibilities, and the services available to them in terms that they understand.
